MARUMI

In the '80s, when downtown NYC was gritty, wild, and full of opportunities, Japanese ex-pats Takashi Sando and Mamoru Tsunoda met while working at a sushi restaurant on Waverly Place. Takashi and Mamoru had worked at restaurants back home in Osaka and were excited to introduce Japanese food to an American audience.

 

With a third partner, Kenji Tomita, they opened Marumi on LaGuardia Place in 1991, in the heart of the NYU campus. Serving delicious, affordable, home-style Japanese food, Marumi quickly became a local fixture with a loyal clientele. Over the last thirty-plus years, Marumi's owners have watched their customer's kids (as well as their own) grow up and move away; even as the neighborhood changes and evolves, Marumi remains a Village favorite.

 

With the proliferation of expensive omakase restaurants in New York City, Marumi continues to serve high-quality sushi, sashimi, and various classic Japanese dishes at reasonable prices.
